What to do when your Vista to Windows 7 Upgrade hangs at 62%

This tip will help you increase your chances of solving the problem by providing general guidance and links to authoritative sites.

The first step that you need to do, when you realize that your computer is stuck at the 62% mark during the upgrade to Windows 7 process, is to restart your computer. This will roll it back to Windows Vista.

Now you may examine the C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log to understand what happened (if you feel inclined to delve into such detailed level). Usually this happens because the Iphlpsvc service stops responding during the upgrade.

At this point, you can fix the problem either manually (the "not always clear way") or download the Microsoft Fix it 50319 app. Both can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/975253.

For your convenience, we are bringing a summary of the steps needed to manually recover from the problem, assuming you have already restarted your computer:

1. In the Start menu, navigate to Computer, then right-click it and select Properties in the context menu .
2. Select the Advanced tab. Now click the Environment Variables button.
3. Add to System variables a new environment variable named MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS with the value IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll.
4. Close all dialog boxes by clicking their OK buttons..  
   

You are now ready to proceed with the upgrade by simply starting installation again.
