What is the JPEG (or JPG) file
format and
what does SaveAsJPEG do?
A photograph or a graphic image is stored in your computer in
a
file. There are many standards ("formats") for such picture file. Among
the common ones on the Windows operating system, you may encounter BMP,
ICON, GIF, JPEG, Exif, PNG, TIFF, WMF, and EMF files. Generally
speaking, these formats can be divided into two major categories:
- Lossless
- Allows the exact original data to be reconstructed from the file,
even if some of this date is not really needed by the human eye.
- Lossy - Discards
(loses) some of the original details in order to allow producing a much
smaller (compressed) file. At a reasonable compression level, the
result is imperceptible by the human eye, where the
mind can easily see past very minor errors or inconsistencies.
The JPEG file format belongs to the second group (lossy file format)
and is very popular due its ability to significantly compress
photographs and paintings of realistic scenes without
loosing perceptible details. This is especially important for
web
usage, where file size translates directly to bandwidth use.
JPEG file usually have the file extension .jpg, .jpeg, jpe and in
Windows can also be identified by its file type: "JPEG Image".
Converting a picture from one file format to another is typically
supported by bulky (and sometimes expensive) image editing software
such as
Adobe Photoshop or
GIMP.
Such programs take long to time open and if you encounter a situation
where you need to frequently convert image files to JPEG, you may find
our
SaveAsJPEG a true life saver: With a
single click
(after right-clicking the file's context menu) it instantly saves a
copy of your file as a
JPEG Image type. Your
original picture file remains intact.
In the following snapshot you can see the original files selected, a
moment before using
SaveAsJPEG to convert them, in
one fell swoop, to JPEG:
And a moment later, the same files are still selected, but each now has
a copy in JPEG format.:
Note: Depending on the original
picture, saving in JPEG format will typically result in a smaller file
size. However, because
SaveAsJPEG attempts to save
the picture in the
highest possible quality
that is achievable in JPEG, it doesn't attempt to optimize for file
size. If you are interested in a tool that will maximize quality for a
desired
file size, please see our
PhotoFileSizer.
The file extension currently supported by
SaveAsJPEG are:
.bmp, .emf, gif, .ico, .png, .tif and .tiff.

SaveAsJPEG is

a single click, performing a total cleanup after itself.
