Export Registry Classes Root

It's Free!

Troubleshooting a problem on your computer?

If you are asked by tech support or a technician to generate two text files containing "Registry Classes Root information" about your computer, our HKCRExport makes it easier for you by eliminating the need to type cryptic commands - and it’s free!

Simply download and install HKCRExport and you will find three files named hkcrlm.txt, hkcrcu.txt and hkcufileexts.txt on your desktop. You can then email them to tech support (or analyze them yourself, if you feel like doing so).

What is the Registry and what does HKCRExport do?

The Registry (in Windows) is a database that stores configuration settings and options of applications and the system itself. Some of these settings are critical to proper system function. A built-in utility in Windows, provided by Microsoft, displays a comprehensive view of the registry and even lets you edit it. It is considered dangerous for use by non-experts and thus its use should be limited by PC professionals when troubleshooting problems. Registry information could be valuable source of information for a technician trying to troubleshoot a problem in your computer. Sometimes, however, physical access to your computer or remote desktop view is not possible and you may need to email the same information as a text file attachment.

Software Candy now makes it simple to create these text files, containing diagnostic information and helping repair your PC. Once installed on your Windows system, you can find three files named  hkcrlm.txt, hkcrcu.txt and hkcufileexts.txt on your desktop. You can then attach them to an email, or submit it in other ways (such as an upload to a tech support forum), to facilitate troubleshooting of the problem at hand. There’s no need to remember any complicated syntax or cryptic commands to generate this important file.

Note: Before emailing or uploading these files, we recommend compressing them with a zip program such as WinZip or the free 7-Zip. We also recommend using a file delivery service such as the free, instead of attaching the file to a regular email message (as many email service providers block email with large attachments).

As with all Software Candy products, HKCRExport is completely free of any viruses or spyware (digitally signed for authenticity and integrity) and is well tested for its advertised features. If ever needed, you can also uninstall it completely with a single click, performing a total cleanup after itself.

The beauty of this wizard is that you don't have to follow any complex instructions. Once you download this app (keep it on in an easy-to-find folder), you double-click it, click the Next button on the installation wizard and Voila!  Three files named hkcrlm.txt, hkcrcu.txt and hkcufileexts.txt can be found on your desktop.

Note: no desktop icons will be installed, as to avoid cluttering your desktop. Instead, you will find a Software Candy entry in your Start Menu, which allows you to uninstall it, should you ever want to do this.

Also note that as soon as you are done sharing the file with tech support, it is advised that delete it from your desktop and uninstall HKCRExport.

Whether you have virus protection in the form of a Windows anti virus or anti malware, it is important to note that no virus scanner can detect all types of PC virus. Even when your computer is updated to the latest antivirus 2010 and properly detects most viruses, it cannot detect all viruses. When a virus infects your computer it is quite possible that it modified the registry as well. A technician trying to troubleshoot problems in your PC will eventually have to check your registry, whether remotely or on site.

This is where we step in and provide this free registry export. Since the registry can become huge, we provide tools that export only selected segments of the registry, based on advice and guidance you receive from tech support. Please note that although our HKCRExport can be used to backup your registry's HKCR, it is not backup software. It is always a good idea to backup your data and your registry but this is the realm of backup software, which is beyond the scope of a single-function app..

  • Q1. I downloaded and installed this software and I found the files named  hkcrlm.txt, hkcrcu.txt and hkcufileexts.txt on my desktop. What do I do now?
  • A1. We recommend compressing them with a zip program such as WinZip or the free 7-Zip before sharing them with your tech support.
  • Q2. I downloaded and installed this software and it produced an HKCR file as you described. Thank you! However, I can't find an icon for this software on the desktop. Did I do anything wrong?
