Windows 7's scrolling Start Menu. The time and
annoyance
you'll save by
using this easy to use and well tested product is well worth the
tiny price!
What is the Windows Start Menu and what
does ClassicAllPrograms7 do?
The Start menu in Windows is the menu displayed when you click the
Start button. The Start button is located at one end
of the Taskbar (typically at the lower left corner of the desktop). It
is a conventional (and easy to remember) way to launch
programs,
access the control panel, find files, log off, etc.
A sub menu of the Start menu, named "All Programs", contains links to
all the programs installed on your computer.
In Windows 7, when you click (or hover for a few seconds) on "All
Programs", it will be replaced by "Back" and the menu will be replaced
by a sub-menu.
While many users find it refreshing and even easier to use, many others
prefer to use the quicker and more powerful fly-out classic XP style.
Microsoft
acknowledged that in Windows Vista by offering the option of restoring
that "classic" Start Menu, but for some reason this option is no longer
available in Windows 7.
Instead of replacing the Windows 7 Start menu entirely with a Windows
XP one, Software Candy offers a much safer and robust option:
Keep
the entire system as originally designed and shipped -- and add a
Programs Menu that behaves like the Windows XP All Programs menu:
This approach has the following advantages over other attempts to
address this issue:
- It allows for a gradual "getting used to" the new Windows 7
menu style, while enjoying that instinctive cascading menu XP style.
- It is more likely to sustain Windows Updates, avoiding
unpleasant
surprises that characterize complex replacement of an entire subsystem.
- It is less likely to contain bugs, because it is made
entirely
of registry tweaks, with no executable code that hooks into
the
the system internals.
Because
ClassicAllPrograms7 creates a "Programs"
menu in the slot
that was reserved for the typically unused "Favorites", this could be a
downside if you are used to opening Favorites from the Start menu
(instead from Internet Explorer). Still, considering the benefit of
"having the cake and eating it too", this is a minor trade off and, in
the unlikely case in which you want the Favorites menu back, simply
uninstall
ClassicAllPrograms7
and your Favorites menu will be restored to its exact original state.
Also note that the classic fly-out Programs menu, will display only
programs available to all users. That is, a program installed
such
that it is available to you only, will not appear on the classic
cascading Programs menu. It will of course be displayed on the Windows
7 menu, though.
As with all Software Candy products,
ClassicAllPrograms7
is
completely free of any viruses or spyware (digitally signed for
authenticity and integrity) and is well tested for its advertised
features. If ever needed, you can also uninstall it completely with
a single click, performing a total cleanup after itself.
